          Concert Bands


          Concert Band

          This band is designed for freshmen (and upper classmen) that are working on mastering basic musical skills. Techniques, scales, basic music theory, and music history will be discussed. Many styles of band literature will be studied and performed.

          Symphonic Band

          This band is for intermediate musicians working on achieving a more advanced skill level. All styles of music will be studied and performed with an emphasis on modern and current band literatu

          Wind Ensemble

          This course is designed for the most advanced instrumental music students. Class size will be smaller and more individualized. Advanced band literature and orchestral transcriptions will be studied and performed. Music theory, history, form, and analysis will be discussed.

          Jazz Ensemble

          Selected students also have the opportunity to perform in a Jazz Band. This band is designed for advanced students wishing to learn the more intricate and challenging music from the great jazz band masters. The band generally includes 8 to 10 brass and saxophone players as well as piano, drum, and guitar players, but is open for all to tryout. 

          Placement within this band requires an audition and/or director’s approval. The band will perform at the regular band concerts, and may have occasional sectionals before or after school.

          MSBOA Solo & Ensemble results!

          On Saturday, January 28th, Chippewa Valley High School band students participated in the MSBOA District 16 Solo & Ensemble Festival held at Rochester High School.  Students performed solos and in small ensembles for judges, who rated them either First Division, Second Division, Third Division, Fourth Division or Fifth Division, with First Division being the highest rating.

          Acceptance and Performances

          Acceptance into Concert Band requires junior high/middle school experience or director’s approval. Placement into Symphonic or Wind Ensemble bands may include an audition in addition to director’s approval.  All band members will perform several concerts and festivals (as listed below), and may have occasional sectionals before or after school.

          - Fall Collage Concert (usually in October)
          - Holiday Concert (usually in December)
          - Band, Solo & Ensemble Festivals (usually in January)
          - Winter Concert (usually in February)
          - Spring Concert (usually in May)

           Marching Band Notice

          Members of any of the above bands are also eligible to join the marching band, which is held after school. Students must be enrolled in a band class to be eligible for marching band (excluding color guard members - see the guard page).  Students that complete two years of marching band may waive a .5 credit of either PE I or PE II.
